In order to understand or embark on website design, we must first look at what makes up a website design project. Website design projects are composed of four major areas of design: aesthetic design, informational design, technical design and web authoring, each requiring completely different thought process.
Aesthetic design
Aesthetic design is the design of all visual and auditory elements. The aesthetic designer creates the visual look of a web site, the different graphical elements, and the styles of multimedia to be used. He or she is also responsible for the styles and types of sound reinforcements used, background music, and the appearance of any other collateral material associated with the project.
Informational design
The content delivered in production must also be actively designed. Information has an inherent structure, and that structure must be understood and exploited in the design of a web site production. The information designer develops that structure, and orders the content so that it will be appropriate for the target audience.
Technical design
The technical design must reflect a deep understanding of the way different computing environments operate and inter-operate. It is the designer's job to construct an overall technical plan that can accomplish the goals of the product.
Website designer
The website designer is responsible to the product itself. He or she must create the overall structure of the project, determine where to begin, where to go, and how to get there. The website designer must be must be fluent in both the vocabulary and thought process of each of the other designers; develop assignments for them; listen to their feedback; continually reassess the direction of the production process; and communicate new and modified instructions to the other designers. He or she must pre-visualize the end product, and orchestrate the construction process so that the initial vision is realized.
Each of these design areas must be represented at the production meetings. Each must have not only a deep understanding of his own area of expertise, but also a sensitivity towards the needs and qualities of the other area of design. So it is the responsibility of each designer to look toward the whole, understand how each component fits together as part of a whole.
